The stage on which the jazz musicians will perform will be open-air as always (at the town square) and the concerts will be absolutely free.
Why Bansko and why a Jazz Festival?
At first glance it probably looks odd that such a big and renowned music festival, and a jazz festival that is, would pop up in a resort town such as Bansko, at the foot of Pirinmountains.
The history of the festival started 20 years ago with a doctor who decided to open a clinic in Bansko. Dr. Emil Iliev, a well-known dermatologist and acupuncturist with years of practice in Bulgaria and Germany, opened his clinic and very soon it becomes popular and searched for by people who want to learn to live healthy and eat in a balanced way. The clinic is quickly filled with people from different European countries who also need some kind of amusement and music programs.
And precisely then it occurs to Dr. Iliev that jazz music is exactly what the guests of his clinic need. In the beginning he only invites Bulgarian performers like Kameliya Todorova, MitkoShanov, Vasil Petrov, ViliKazasyan. Musical cycles are almost chamber but very soon Dr. Iliev understands that people love jazz music and need it. Therefore he convinces the then mayor of Bansko to establish an international Jazz Festival.
Since then, every summer for several days in August, the town is in the swirl of jazz and thousands of jazz music fans and guests of the town can enjoy the concerts of their favorite artists.
