Portugal sits at Europe’s south-west point and includes the Azores and Madeira archipelagos located in the Atlantic Ocean. The country’s mainland has 88,889 km2 area.

Traveling to Portugal

The Azores are located between Europe and North America with 2,355 km2 area. They are composed of 9 islands. It takes around a couple of hours to get to the mainland Portugal from the Azores by plane.

The Madeira Archipelago has 741 km2 area and around 1,000 km from the European continent and 500 km from the African cost.


  • Mainland Portugal- In Portugal, the climate tends to vary by regions. The climates are influenced by the latitude, proximity to the sea and relief. There are colder winters in the Porto e Norte area and Beiras region though the temperatures are mild if compared to the rest of Europe. Trás-os-Montes in north-eastern Portugal and Alentejo have hot and dry summers. In the coastal areas, temperatures are slightly lower due to the sea’s influence. In autumn, there are usually, sunny days.
  • Azores- The Azores have a climate influenced by the latitude of the island and the Gulf Stream. They have mild temperatures all year round.
  • Madeira-This archipelago has exceptionally mild climate with average temperature tends to vary between 24 ºC in summer and 19 ºC in winter.

Portugal has around 10 million population. The greatest population density is at Lisnon and its suburbs where around 1.9 million live. Portugal’s second biggest city is Oporto in the north. In general, more people lies in the coastal regions of the country than in the inland areas.



Around 250 million people in each continent speaks Portuguese which is the world’s fifth most spoken. But in Portugal, many people can communicate in Spanish, French and English.
